Job Description:

Outpatient Services operate within the Stephenson Pet Clinic of the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital and include Dermatology, Integrative Medicine with Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Community Practice, and Shared Services. These services require patients to remain in the hospital for portions of their visit in order to complete diagnostics, treatments, or procedures. This position serves as a floor technician within the teaching hospital while also supporting coordination across the broader outpatient service areas, collaborating with staff from other outpatient services as operational needs require. Responsibilities include assisting with Workday-related tasks, facilitating requests for Shared Service technician coverage, supporting staff coordination and task delegation, and helping maintain organization and accountability for both individual and shared clinical areas. This position also assists with addressing operational issues specific to the outpatient services and the Stephenson Pet Clinic environment.

Job Responsibilities:

30%-Lead, supervise, & manage assigned nursing staff. To include full-time, part-time, & student employees across multiple departments. Ensure appropriate technical staff coverage as necessary for individual services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, weekends, emergency closures, & coverage of requested leave. To include both working and on-call coverage. Provide orientation & training to students, technicians & house officers. Provide guidance & support to lead workers.

30%-Serve as a floor technician for the assigned service, performing, demonstrating, and teaching the skills and competencies essential for success. Responsibilities include performing and instructing students in patient restraint, care, and monitoring; guiding proper procedure set-up and equipment maintenance; supporting client communication and fee capture; and promoting strong hospital bio-security and safety practices.

20%-Work with the nursing director to recruit, interview, hire, & train new staff as well as conduct performance reviews & planning sessions with current staff. Hold staff accountable, documenting coaching conversations & following through with disciplinary write-ups as recommended by HRM.

Work with clinical staff to ensure a cohesive relationship between technicians & clinicians.

15%-Perform and demonstrate proper animal restraint, diagnostics, treatments, and specialized procedures across diverse specialties such as ophthalmology, dermatology, integrative medicine, rehabilitation, community practice, and theriogenology. Be proficient in coordinating appointments, surgeries, and labs; orienting veterinary and technician students; and fostering active student participation in clinical care. Additional responsibilities include accurate record keeping, fee capture, operation and maintenance of specialized equipment; and upholding infectious disease control, disinfection, and bio-security protocols.

5%-Manage controlled drug audits. Participate in emergency response. Participate in blood bank on-call. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with 4 years of experience; OR An Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology with 4 years of experience; Or credentials as a vet tech or equivalent (licensed, registered, etc.) with 4 years of experience.

Specific Experience: 1 year of supervisory, leadership, or administrative experience related to the duties of the job.

Preferred Certifications/Licenses: CVT, RVT, LVT Certified, Registered, or Licensed Veterinary Technician

Special or Physical Qualifications:

Able to answer phone calls after hours from students for issues regarding department. Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.

Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, sitting, climbing, crawling, bending, squatting, and/or twisting.  

This position is subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with PS-67.
